How to Read a Vanity Specification
A vanity specification can look complete because it contains a drawing and several measurements. The problems usually sit in what is not labelled: whether the width belongs to the cabinet or top, whether the basin is included, or whether dimensions are nominal or finished. Reading the sheet in a consistent order helps purchasing and project teams catch these gaps before approval.
Confirm document identity before reading the details
Check the model code, revision number, date, finish and unit of measurement. Make sure the drawing belongs to the same configuration as the quotation. A familiar model name is not enough when the range includes several widths, basins or mirror options.
Use one approved revision for purchasing, production and inspection. If a change is agreed by email, move it into the controlled specification instead of leaving the decision buried in a message thread.
Separate cabinet, countertop and overall dimensions
Read width, depth and height for the cabinet first. Then locate the finished countertop dimensions and any overhang. For wall-mounted models, distinguish cabinet height from the installed height above the finished floor. Mirrors and mirrored cabinets should have their own complete dimensions.
Look for tolerances and establish whether the figures are nominal. This is critical when a vanity fits between walls or aligns with tile joints. A product sold as 900 mm may not have a finished top that measures exactly 900 mm.
Trace the basin and plumbing zone
Find the basin centreline, bowl depth, waste position, tap holes and overflow. Then follow that space into the cabinet. Check whether the trap conflicts with a drawer, shelf or internal brace, and whether the back panel has an opening large enough for the intended installation.
Project drawings should coordinate the vanity with site plumbing, but do not assume the product drawing shows the final room connection. Ask which dimensions are product facts and which are suggested installation positions.
A front elevation is not enough
Request plan and section views when basin depth, drawers or wall clearances are important. The side section often reveals the clash that a clean front elevation hides.
Read the construction schedule line by line
The sheet should identify the substrate and thickness for major components, the finish, visible edge treatment, hinge or runner type and handle arrangement. Check whether the back panel, drawer boxes and door fronts use the same material as the carcass or a different one.
For wall-hung units, review brackets, fixing points and any rail supplied with the vanity. The installer remains responsible for suitable wall fixings, but the product specification should make the cabinet mounting arrangement understandable.
Check what is included, packed and approved
A specification is incomplete if the buyer cannot tell what arrives. Confirm whether the set includes the basin, countertop, mirror, tap, waste, handles and mounting hardware. Note how many cartons make up one set and whether fragile parts ship separately.
Cross-check the sheet against the quotation and purchase order. Then retain it for quality inspection before shipment. A specification earns its value when the same version guides every stage.
Frequently Asked Questions
What dimensions should a vanity specification show?
At minimum, check cabinet width, depth and height, finished countertop size, basin position, plumbing clearance and mirror dimensions where applicable.
What does a drawing revision number mean?
It identifies a particular version of the drawing. Purchasing, production and inspection should refer to the same approved revision.
Why are cabinet and countertop dimensions different?
The countertop may overhang the cabinet at the front or sides, and an integrated top may use a nominal size different from the carcass.
Does a vanity specification include installation instructions?
It may show mounting points and suggested positions, but the project still needs suitable site-specific installation instructions and wall fixings.
How do I know which accessories are included?
Check the component or packing list and confirm it against the quotation. Do not assume styled items in a product image are included.
